Flashback: Young Claire Does Shakespeare

April 7, 2024

Hello dear readers! I am deep into season 3 of Northern Exposure, and working hard to bring you a full report on Maggie O'Connell's dead boyfriends. In the interim, though, I'd like to offer up a special treat: an amateur podcast about the time my family set out to see Much Ado About Nothing, and along the way, a few things happened.

What does this have to do with anything?

Hmm, well, the play does feature a girlfriend faking her death to punish her fiancé for publicly humiliating her after the villain tricked him into thinking she'd cheated on him the night before their wedding. (No, that doesn't make more sense in context, but it is funnier than it sounds.) My podcast also has audio clips from an adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing that was directed by noted sexist meanie Joss Whedon, who has the rare talent of being able to convince lots of famous people to film a Shakespearean adaptation at his private house while on break from making The Avengers, and whose art we recently agreed to separate from the artist.

Otherwise, its only connection to the DFGRR is that I am a product of my childhood experiences (as we all are), and this story is an important memory for me. Plus it's only 30 minutes long, so give it a try!

About

Male protagonists of long-running franchises tend to be unlucky in love, by which I mean their girlfriends tend to die. The Dead Fictional Girlfriends Research Report tracks and analyzes this phenomenon - its causes, its prevalence, and its implications for the world of entertainment (and beyond).
